Illustrated album

We all know what illustrated books are but have you ever heard of an illustrated album?

In the next posts, I will try to make a distinction between the two.

It should be noted that I did some research on this distinction during my Master's thesis and that, although there is a lot to be said on the subject, I will try to make it as brief as possible.

Although they look similar. The illustrated album is a distinct product from the picture book. In the first, the text and the illustration have the same importance, while in the second, the image is at the service of the text, having the function of explaining or helping to understand.

Luís Mendonça (2012) writes about the illustrated album and the definition of the word in The importance of the illustrator in the booking process, stating that:

“The terminology is not homogeneous. However, and with regard to the text-image relationship, as well as the book as a totalizing object, it will be undisputed to state that in the illustrated book, the text takes precedence over the image, which can be waived or requested in this subservience, while in the album, the link between the first and the second is intrinsic.” (pag. 29)
